Hounslow Leisure Centres - Hanworth Air Park Leisure Centre & Library

Pringle Richards Sharratt were appointed as architects for the comprehensive refurbishment of the Hanworth Air Park Leisure Centre & Library by The London Borough of Hounslow, through The Clarkson Alliance as Project Managers. The brief was to completely rejuvenate the leisure centre to a standard equivalent to that of many local private facilities.

Hanworth Air Park Leisure Centre and Library was originally built in the 1970s but had steadily declined to a very poor condition, having suffered from a lack of maintenance over the last 10-15 years. Working closely with the operator Fusion Lifestyle, PRS were able to quickly develop various options for whole site changes for consideration by LB Hounslow.

The project chosen included the creation of new 100 station gym, two exercise studios, a crèche, café, a new inviting reception, a spa suite, an all-new village-style wet changing facility, new dry changing rooms and new external tennis and five-a-side courts. It also included the integration into the rejuvenated leisure hub of the existing Hanworth Library.

The project presented a great number of challenges both financially and during construction, as it was executed in phases, with the building remaining in part operational throughout the refurbishment of the existing pool halls and squash court block. Once work started it became apparent that a large portion of the building had serious structural problems resulting in the demolition and rebuilding of these affected sections.

Despite this, user satisfaction levels have been extremely high and the operator’s revenue stream has exceeded projected levels in a much shorter period than originally anticipated.

At its re-opening, first LB Hounslow and then Fusion said the following:
